Family visas

Living with family in the UK

You need a family visa to live with a family member in the UK for more than 6 months.

👪

Who you can join

Your spouse or partner · fiancé(e) or proposed civil partner · child · parent · or a relative who'll provide long-term care for you.

💵

Income requirement

Partner routes have a minimum income (financial) requirement — the threshold depends on your circumstances. Check the current figure on gov.uk before applying.

🏠

Route to settlement

You must live in the UK a set amount of time before you're eligible for settlement. You can extend your visa, then apply for indefinite leave to remain.

Ukraine schemes

Ukrainians and their families

The Ukraine Permission Extension (UPE) scheme lets people already in the UK under a Ukraine scheme continue living here.

🚫

Free to apply

The UPE scheme is free. You can apply from 90 days before your current Ukraine scheme permission expires. Decisions usually take around 8 weeks.

📅

How long you get

An initial 18 months. From 8 April 2026, those with an expiring first UPE grant can apply for a further 24 months — up to 3.5 years in total under UPE.

🎓

Who qualifies

Ukrainian nationals (and family members) in the UK with permission under Homes for Ukraine, the Ukraine Family Scheme, the Ukraine Extension Scheme or an earlier UPE grant.

⚠️

Applying from outside the UK? The Homes for Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme remains the route for Ukrainians with a UK sponsor — see gov.uk guidance.
